What to do before changing your internet provider or router

Objective

Prepare your phone system before replacing your internet provider, modem, router, firewall, or network equipment.

Before the change

  1. Contact Automated Telecom before the scheduled change.
  2. Provide the service address, change date, internet provider, and equipment being replaced.
  3. Confirm whether the new service will use the existing router and firewall or new equipment.
  4. Ask the internet provider whether they will change the public IP address, modem, router, firewall, or cabling.
  5. Record how the phones and network switches are currently connected.
  6. Schedule the work outside important calling hours when possible.
  7. Confirm that ConnectUC Mobile is installed and signed in as a temporary calling option.

Changing a router, firewall, modem, public IP address, or network cabling can interrupt phone registration and active calls.

After the change

  1. Confirm that computers can reach the internet.
  2. Allow the modem, router, switches, and phones several minutes to reconnect.
  3. Confirm that phones no longer display No Service or Unregistered.
  4. Place an outbound call.
  5. Call the business number and confirm that incoming calls reach the expected destination.
  6. Confirm clear two-way audio.

Verification

Confirm that every desk phone registers, outbound and inbound calls complete, and both parties hear clear two-way audio.

Expected result: The phone system operates normally through the new internet or network equipment.
