How to prepare your phone system for a planned power outage

Objective

Reduce phone-service disruption before planned electrical maintenance or a scheduled outage.

Before the outage

  1. Record the expected start time, duration, and affected areas.
  2. Identify the modem, router, firewall, network switches, phone power supplies, and other equipment that will lose power.
  3. Confirm which devices are connected to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS).
  4. Save work and avoid scheduling important calls during the outage.
  5. Confirm that ConnectUC Mobile is installed, signed in, and allowed to use cellular data.
  6. Tell staff how customers should reach the business during the outage.

A UPS provides temporary runtime, not unlimited operation. Do not connect equipment to an undersized or damaged backup battery.

After power returns

  1. Allow the internet and network equipment to start before troubleshooting individual phones.
  2. Confirm internet access.
  3. Confirm that phones register.
  4. Test inbound and outbound calls and two-way audio.

Verification

Confirm that the normal call flow, voicemail, desk phones, and ConnectUC users operate after power is restored.

Expected result: The phone system returns to normal service and staff have a temporary calling option during the outage.
